Samsung hosted a press event 9/26 in Seoul unveiling two new varieties of the popular SII phone, one labeled the SII LTE & an HD version (insert drool factor) SII HD LTE, with a delicious 4.65" 1280x720 Super AMOLED screen.

Both phones will run Gingerbread 2.3 and powered by dual-core 1.5 GHz cpu's, have LTE (similiar to 4G) and HSPA+ means they'll be backward compatible with current 3G. The fact that they won't have Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) on them is probably due to their release prior to ICS.

The SII LTE will pack a 4.5" (800x480) Super AMOLED Plus, while the HD version will get a slightly larger 4.65" (1280x720) Super AMOLED screen. That means the HD's screen has a pixel pitch of 316 pixels per inch (ppi), meaning a sharper, crisper image.

These phones will be released domestically in Korea, but it's likely that global variants will pop up shortly. Consumers and smartphone aficionados will just have to wait for the HD version's announcement.

The HD version of the SII makes us wonder if it's the same or similiar hardware as will be on the next Nexus phone, but I have a feeling according to other rumors that Google is planning to launch an even more powerful phone targeted to compete (aka blow away) the IPhone 5, on Nov. 3rd. The Iphone 5 is scheduled to be announced October 4th.
